Change of scenery

I'd need to give my body and mind a break! Last week I ran less than other weeks. I went swimming twice, 25 minutes on Wednesday and 30 minutes on Saturday. But I swam in the sea and as a consequence I didn't try to work harder than in a regular pool. During this summer I'm going to run three times a week and swimming (or biking) twice a week.
I'm not running a race in July and August, so I'm doing something other than running to give my body and mind a break. Since the 25th of June I've started cycling and swimming once or twice a week. Of course I'm not training for triathlons. If these activities gave me a stronger aerobic engine my running would improve. I should usually see some gains.
I've read a debate focused on the relation between running and routine: the psychological effects of following the same routine can be just as limiting. After about only three or four weeks of the same low or high intensity training program, the benefit of running tend to decrease. Most experts say that "runners are creatures of habit, but this can be often lead to stagnating performance".
I hope that all you blogger friends of that running community will have a nice training!

In summer I think that the slow down is important and more important is the cross training because it's hard to run as usual in Civitavecchia under this hot sun. A friend of mine, former local top runner said: "every season has its own sport". Time to swim now.

It's really good to change up your routine every now and again. It keeps you mentally and physically fresh.

I agree - if it's too hot to run, do something else! And it's definitely too hot to run right now, although I did see a lot of runners out yesterday morning in Torino. Having a great time here, in spite of the heat!

Swimming and biking sounds like a great plan to me. Your body should respond positively to this. Enjoy the training Giorgio!

Hai,

Read your comments several times on Amy's blog. As I'm a runner too (well a slow one) and love Italy I thought it would be nice to follow an Italian runner so here I am :)

I'm Dutch, if you want to feel free to visit my blog someday:

The problem with me, Giorgio, is that running is the only thing I'm any good at! I keep it interesting by varying my routes as much as I can from week to week.
You are fortunate to have access to the sea in hot weather. On our recent holiday it was bliss to get into a cool sea at the end of a scorching hot day - in spite of all the jellyfish!

Hi Giorgio,
You are right, sometimes our body and brains need a break from our crazy workouts! Good job with doing the swimming and biking! I am with Runningfox...running is the only thing that I am really good at. I will be biking soon and am looking forward to that! Unfortunately, I am a terrible swimmer:) Good for you Giorgio...keep up the great work!

I think giving yourself some easy weeks is important. It helps reduce the occurrence of over training and makes you enjoy running more when you do it.
